Bathed
by two main rivers and several others affluents, Coxim is a small
town located in the northern Mato Grosso do Sul at about 150 miles
away from Campo Grande, the state’s capital. Its population
is about 31.000 inhabitants, however, it is one of the most important
cities in a region of 80.000 square kilometers wide.
It is the main gate for the Pantanal of Paiagua and the only one from
where expeditions and trips are organized along it. A place of very
important infrastructure to serve visitors: restaurants, hotels, banks,
cybercafés (broadband), street-markets, diverse shops, post
offices, bus station and a private airport among others.
The town also holds three universities, public and private ones, which
makes Coxim buzz with life, lots of young and open minded people,
all year long. Its economy is based on the cattle culture, familiar
agriculture, fishing, trade, and now, ecotourism, which is the newest
increasing activity .
Its very peculiar culture, art and history are well shown in the music,
craftworks and gastronomy in town.
The main symbols of it are the Cedar Tree, an icon of its history
and culture, and the Taquari River, which is responsible for one third
of the life in the pantanal (water, fish, eggs, organic material,
seeds, etc).
Founded in 1729 under the name of Arraial do Beliago it is the oldest
settlement of the state. Peculiar culture and facilities to make trips
along the Pantanal of Paiagua and the rivers of the basin make Coxim
a big attraction for those looking for exploration out of the beaten
tracks.
There are no conventional operators or agencies in Coxim but only
a few who develop social programs to improve the quality of life in
the town pointing the sustainable ecotourism as an economical alternative.
